How to measure

Use a flexible tape, stand naturally and ask someone to help where possible. Record every value in inches.

Take each measurement once, carefully

  1. Tape measure placed across the back of a tailoring mannequin

    Back

    Measure from one shoulder bone across the back to the other shoulder bone.

  2. Sleeve length measured from shoulder to wrist

    Sleeve

    Measure from the shoulder bone down to the wrist, keeping the arm relaxed.

  3. Chest circumference measured on a tailoring mannequin

    Chest

    Wrap the tape around the fullest part of the chest and keep it level.

    Add 3 inches to the exact body measurement.
  4. Stomach circumference measured on a tailoring mannequin

    Stomach

    Wrap the tape around the fullest part of the stomach without pulling it tight.

    Add 2 inches to the exact body measurement.
  5. Jacket and native top length measured vertically

    Top length

    Measure from the base of the neck down to the preferred jacket or native top length.

  6. Upper arm circumference measured with a tape

    Biceps / round sleeve

    Wrap the tape around the fullest part of the upper arm.

    Add 1.5 inches to the exact body measurement.
  7. Neck circumference measured at the collar line

    Neck

    Measure around the base of the neck where a shirt collar naturally sits.

  8. Waist circumference measured on a tailoring mannequin

    Waist

    Wrap the tape around the natural waistline while standing comfortably.

  9. Thigh circumference measured on a tailoring mannequin

    Thigh

    Measure around the fullest part of one thigh.

    Add 2 inches to the exact body measurement.

    Trouser length

    Measure from the waistline down the outside of the leg to the preferred hem.

    Calf

    Wrap the tape around the fullest part of the calf.

    Add 1 inch to the exact body measurement.
  12. Ankle circumference measured with a tape

    Ankle

    Measure around the ankle at the point where the trouser opening will sit.

  13. Head circumference measured for a traditional cap

    Cap

    Wrap the tape around the head where the cap will sit, just above the ears.
